At Phoenix Dance Team, we believe great training isn’t defined by the size of a studio or the number of mirrors on the wall. It’s defined by quality teaching, emotional safety, confidence-building, and genuine care for each dancer as an individual. Every decision we make from class sizes and timetabling to performance opportunities is guided by what best supports children to grow with confidence, balance and joy.
This is how Phoenix remains a home for every dancer’s journey.

Why does Phoenix Dance Team operate out of community halls?
This is a very intentional choice.
Phoenix Dance Team operates out of local community halls so we can keep dance accessible and affordable for families, invest in high-quality teaching, and stay closely connected to the community we serve. As a mum myself, I understand how quickly costs can add up, and I’ve always wanted Phoenix to feel welcoming and achievable for families.

Our priority has always been investing in teaching quality, class experience and dancer wellbeing - not bricks, mirrors or high overheads.

Does training in a community hall disadvantage my dancer?
Not at all.
Training in community halls helps dancers develop adaptability, spatial awareness and confidence - skills that are valuable not only in dance, but in everyday life. Dancers learn to move, focus and perform in different spaces, building flexibility, resilience and self-belief.

These experiences support children to feel comfortable in new environments, work as part of a group, and trust their bodies - whether they’re on a stage, in a classroom, or simply trying something new for the first time.

While mirrors can be a helpful teaching tool, confident dancers are built through clear instruction, body awareness, musicality and encouragement - not constant self-monitoring. Learning in varied spaces builds confidence, independence and adaptability, qualities that support children not just in dance, but at school and in the wider world.

What matters most isn’t where children dance - it’s how they are taught, how they are supported, and how they feel when they walk into class.

Why doesn’t Phoenix Dance Team offer an extensive timetable?

Phoenix Dance Team believes in purposeful training, not overloading children.

As both a teacher and a mum, I’m very mindful of balance. Rather than offering large timetables that fill every spare hour, Phoenix Dance Team focuses on:

-
Well-structured, meaningful classes
-
Balance between dance, school, rest and family life
-
Supporting growth without burnout

We would rather offer fewer, high-quality classes where dancers feel supported, motivated and excited to attend, than a packed timetable that leaves children and families overwhelmed.
Will fewer classes limit my child’s progress?
No. Progress comes from quality instruction, consistency and confidence, not simply the number of hours spent in class. Dancers at Phoenix build strong foundations and develop at an age-appropriate pace.
For dancers who are ready for more, development and elite pathways are available when the timing is right and aligned with their readiness and wellbeing.

Why are spaces limited at Phoenix Dance Team?

Spaces are intentionally limited so we can maintain a supportive, personalised learning environment.
Capped student numbers allow us to:
-
Give individual attention
-
Maintain calm, focused classes
-
Support confidence and emotional safety
-
Build strong teacher–student relationships
As a mum, I know how important it is to feel that your child is truly seen. Limiting numbers ensures every dancer is known, supported and encouraged.

Do all dancers have performance opportunities?
Yes - absolutely.
All Phoenix Dance Team dancers have opportunities to perform, regardless of age or pathway. This includes community events, mid-year showcases, and our end-of-year concert. Performances are designed to be inclusive, confidence-building and joyful, allowing every dancer to feel proud of their progress.

Why is the Troupe Program invitation only?

The Troupe Program is invitation only to ensure it remains a positive, supportive and age-appropriate experience.

Invitations are based on readiness, commitment, attitude, emotional maturity and the ability to work well within a team - not just technical ability. This approach protects dancer wellbeing, supports healthy group dynamics, and ensures each dancer placed in troupe is truly ready.
Not being invited simply means the timing isn’t right yet - not that a dancer lacks talent or potential.

How does Phoenix Dance Team support dancer wellbeing?

At Phoenix, dancer wellbeing isn’t a separate focus - it’s part of how we do everything. My background in psychology and education, combined with the perspective of being a mum, shapes the way classes are run, how children are spoken to, and how challenges are handled. I understand how children develop, how confidence is built, and how much environment, language and relationships matter.

Dancers are supported to try, to make mistakes, and to grow at their own pace in a space that feels safe and encouraging. There is structure and expectation, but never pressure or fear of getting it wrong. Confidence comes from feeling supported and that’s what allows dancers to learn, progress and genuinely enjoy being in the room.
Phoenix Dance Team is a place where children are seen, supported and celebrated for who they are, not just how they dance.

Can Phoenix support dancers who are new to dance
or joining from another studio?
Yes of course!
Many Phoenix dancers join us having never danced before or after transitioning from another studio. We meet each dancer where they are at and support their transition with care, without judgement or pressure.

Strong foundations, confidence and enjoyment are always prioritised over rushing or comparison.
How are different ability levels supported within the same class?
Phoenix Dance Team focuses on individual growth, not comparison.

Within each class, dancers are supported through layered teaching, allowing children to be challenged at their own level while still feeling successful and included. Progress looks different for every dancer, and that is recognised and respected at Phoenix.

Our goal is for every child to feel capable, confident and encouraged, regardless of where they are in their journey.

Choosing the right studio for my dancer - what should I look for?
Choosing a dance studio is a personal decision, and the right fit looks different for every family. I always encourage parents to start by looking at a studio’s values and asking whether they align with what matters most to you and your child. Have a conversation with the studio. Ask questions. Notice how they respond and whether you feel heard and comfortable. Speak to other families, read reviews, and listen to recommendations - especially from parents whose values you trust.
As a mum myself, I know how important it is to feel confident about where your child spends their time. The right studio should feel safe, supportive and welcoming - a place where your child can grow, enjoy dance, and feel like they belong.
Trust your instincts. When it feels right, it usually is.
